CV

Nicolaas Schmidt is a european Gréyalisateur, Dozing Artist and/or Video- and Concept Artist.
He started dreaming at the age of four after visiting the movie theater, in his socialist small town southern of Leipzig, the first time. After integration of GDR into BRD, some ambitious in photographing and jobbing as graphic designer for an advertising agency he studied Mixed and Time Based Media as well Visual Communication / Film (at/with). Finally graduated 2016 with honors at the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg.

His works are shown at international film festivals, exhibitions or other contingencies (including Locarno Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, Montreal Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, Vilnius Film Festival, Athens Film and Video Festival, Kurzfilmtage Oberhausen, Museum of the Moving Image New York City, Arts+Archives Los Angeles, Filmforum Museum Ludwig Köln, Preis der Nationalgalerie Hamburger Bahnhof Berlin, Pylon-Lab Dresden, Cinemateca Uruguaya Montevideo, Filmhuis Cavia Amsterdam, Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, Mousonturm Frankfurt/Main, HMKV Dortmund, Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof, Ausstellungsraum Klingental Basel, Deichtorhallen Hamburg, Glasgow Centre for Contemporary Arts, Kling&Bang Gallery Reykjavik, Erarta Museum St. Petersburg). His films have won numerous awards.

In his media-reflective experiences he manipulates the cinematic timeline until it is emptied in order to recharge it. Schmidt‘s work deals with atmospheric long-term dramaturgies, repetitively characterized elements of banality and subtly ambivalent radicality in reduction&romance*. Nevertheless his films clearly show that a strong concept and great emotions are not mutually exclusive or contradictory. On the contrary: he makes great cinema, not only for cineastes.
*Some occasionally refer to this as visual poetry or romantic conceptualism.

Schmidt is a founding member of VETO Film, EndJoy Antitainment and Eternaltrend Intermediate, a production and distribution lab for audiovisual simplicities, that for example offers the color gradient online series "36000 Frames RGB".
Since 2018 he is working at the art office "Doppelte Unendlichkeit" with Anne Döring. Currently he is available.
